New York City enforces requirements for Exit Signs above and beyond national code requirements. Enforcement of building and fire codes throughout New York are handled by the Division of Code Enforcement and Administration under the New York Department of State.
New York City Exit Sign Requirements
New York City requires the word "EXIT" to be Red in color, 8 inches tall and have a 1 inch line stroke (thickness). NYC Exit Signs have higher visibility since standard Exit Signs are only required to have a 6 inch letter height and smaller stroke.
